3:00 PM Use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Innovative Precast Design at Sydney Metro to Streamline Processes and Cut Production Time
Innovation drove the success of the CPB John Holland Dragados Joint Venture. The Sydney Metro Northwest was the first project where the NSW Government saw the potential and mandated the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) innovation. Using BIM modelling, Sydney Metro Northwest was able to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. Out on site, the Precast Yard produced segments until October 2015 in order to achieve the 98184 pieces necessary for completion with full traceability. Innovative production methods meant that Sydney Metro Northwest reached a world production record with 1700 segments produced per week, an average production of more than 300 segments per day and a maximum of 380 segments produced in one day. This session will explore:
- How issues could be resolved in minutes with BIM that would have been easy to miss in a 2D as built process as clashes are visible in the 3D interface.
- How BIM was able to deliver both cost and timesaving during construction along with maintenance advantages over the life of the asset.
- The use of an anchored gasket in the production of segments to remove the time consuming task of gluing on gaskets after they are cast.
